Crocheting

I'm having one of my annual frustrating explorations into the world of crochet.

Crochet hooks
Sweet little wooden hooks

This year though, I've finally managed to produce a granny square.  In fact three whole granny squares!

First tentative steps into crochet
Three granny squares

I am totally getting carried away and imagining an entire crocheted blanket draped elegantly across the sofa before next weekend.  And it will only be the work of 5 minutes to darn in all those ends, right?

  1. Yay well done on your granny squares - I've got the book, I've got the hook and got the wool but can I heck as like do it - learning from a book is not easy - think I need to visit the m-i-l for a lesson. p.s. your fabric is being used in a patchwork cushion cover - thank you!! xx

  2. Fabulous! You're way ahead of me--even if the blanket isn't ready by next weekend :)

  3. I love the colors of your grannies, I think purpley/blue colors look so romantic. Does it really take a week to get a crochet blankey finished? wow, I would like to take on the personal challenge. I'm looking forward to seeing your complete work of art. As a novice I've been sticking to small projects like cell phone and nook covers and having fun sewing animals motives and flowers on them. The ladies can't resist the cuteness and girlyness of the look at the book club. I've just crocheted a orange cell phone cover with pink flowers on for my $15 Tracfone SVC phone for seniors as I have to carry one around my neck for emergencies. I like the big keys and letters on the screen so I don't have to reach my reading glasses and it only costs me $7/month for emergencies.
It is so satisfying to see someone appreciate your work by showing true pleasure on their face when you make them a gift, I'm already starting to make prezzies for xmas.

  4. I am impressed - I so want to learn too, as I get the impression it is quicker than knitting. However when I tried I ended up 'knitting' lots of stitches onto the needle. How did you find learning it, despite being a keen knitter?

  5. I had a go at crochet the other night with friends. I was so pitiful that I didn't even blog it. It looked like something I might have made bad on purpose in order to blog for comic effect.

And I tried my hardest, too.

  6. Darn in the ends as you go... it's the only way. They look very promising... it will be a beautiful blanket!

  7. I keep trying and then giving up. My aspirations are bigger than my talents when it comes to crochet (and probably plenty more besides).

  8. That's a great start! You can get rid of about half the ends by holding the loose end alongside the bit you are crocheting over (this is where a photo would be useful) and crocheting a few stitches over it. No darning in, simply snip the end!
I did this for the last 30 or so squares of my Kandinsky blanket, but wished I'd thought of it sooner. http://planetcoops.wordpress.com/2011/10/12/kandinsky-blanket-complete/

  9. That is a good start and such pretty colours. I definitely vote for weaving in as you go - much less painful. Keep going, it's looking lovely x

  10. I'm crocheting a granny square blanket for my daughter - blues, greens, grey, pink, purple, brown and cream. Now that I've got the hang of it I can crochet away while talking to friends and family and even watching the television. I love that I can pick it up and lay it aside at will.

  11. Well done. I too am crocheting for the first time, and have set no targets. I just do a square or 2 or 3 if I feel like it and if I have time. I am aiming for a blanket - we'll see. I am enjoying it but feel no pressure, which is the point for me. Good luck with yours.

  12. Well done! I am crochet-challenged. I even went on a crochet course and STILL couldn't do it :/
